What are the main application areas of lead-acid batteries?

Lead-acid battery technology is mature and cost-effective, making it widely used in both everyday life and industrial production. It can be primarily categorized into the following three core areas:

1. Transportation sector (the most common application)

Starting, Lighting, and Ignition (SLI): This is the largest application market for lead-acid batteries. Whether in conventional internal-combustion vehicles or modern hybrid electric vehicles, the vast majority rely on lead-acid batteries to deliver a high surge current instantaneously for engine starting and to power onboard electrical systems such as headlights, audio systems, and instrument panels.

Power sources for electric vehicles: In electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, electric tricycles, and certain low-speed four-wheeled electric vehicles, lead-acid batteries remain the mainstream choice due to their cost-effectiveness and high safety.

Specialty and Industrial Vehicles: Widely used in electric forklifts, golf carts, electric sightseeing vehicles, patrol vehicles, and marine applications for engine starting and onboard power supply systems.

2. Backup Power Supplies and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)

Data Centers and Server Rooms: In the data centers of banks, stock exchanges, and Internet companies, lead-acid batteries serve as the core component of UPS systems, providing immediate power to servers and storage devices in the event of a mains power outage to prevent data loss.

Communication Base Stations: Base stations operated by mobile and telecom carriers are deployed nationwide, with lead-acid batteries serving as backup power sources to ensure uninterrupted communication network operation during power outages.

Medical and Public Facilities: Emergency power supply provided by lead-acid batteries is essential for hospital operating room equipment and monitoring devices, as well as for emergency lighting and security systems in shopping malls and subway stations.

3. Energy Storage and Industrial Power Applications

New energy storage: In solar photovoltaic and wind power generation systems, lead-acid batteries are used to store the generated electricity for use by households or equipment during nighttime or periods of no wind (commonly found in off-grid or small-scale energy storage systems).

Power system: Provides a stable DC operating power supply for the control, protection, and signaling equipment of substations.

Industrial Equipment and Tools: Providing reliable power solutions for a wide range of electric tools (such as electric drills), cranes, drones, robots, and automated production lines.

Although lithium-ion batteries have gained a competitive edge in certain high-end applications—such as premium electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage stations—in recent years, lead-acid batteries continue to play an irreplaceable role in many of these same fields thanks to their exceptionally high safety, well-established recycling infrastructure, and low cost.
